A55 Abergwyngregyn to Tai’r Meibion Improvements
About The Project
A55 Abergwyngregyn to Tai’r Meibion Improvements – Griffiths Community
Griffiths was appointed by Welsh Government to undertake improvement works on the A55 between Abergwyngregyn and Tai’r Meibion, Gwynedd. The Design and Build contract will improve safety along a 2.2km stretch of the carriageway both westbound and eastbound between Junction 12 and 13 by removing direct access off the A55, as well as removing eight gaps in the central reservation, which were originally provided to allow slow moving agricultural vehicles to cross the A55.
The Project also includes over four kilometres of new and improved active travel facilities to encourage cycling and walking, supporting the principles of a low carbon society and also delivering additional flood protection for the A55 through the construction of a significantly improved drainage system, boosting the route’s resilience. Other works have included additional facilities and initiatives to enhance and encourage wildlife and biodiversity.
To minimise disruption, as much work as possible has been completed off the A55 itself by constructing the 1.3km combined access and active travel route, with it being used temporarily as the two-lane eastbound carriageway. This has allowed us to keep traffic moving on this key route via four lanes, albeit under a temporary 40mph speed restriction due to restricted land widths, which have been maintained whilst construction has continued. Project completion is scheduled for Spring 2023.
