Penrhos Road Active Travel Scheme, Bangor, Gwynedd
About The Project
Griffiths were appointed to deliver the Penrhos Road Active Travel Scheme by the North and Mid-Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA) and Cyngor Gwynedd in October 2023. Works commenced on 15th November 2023 with completion scheduled in late Spring 2024.
The project, funded by the Welsh Government (WG) Active Travel Fund and supported by Transport for Wales (TfW) consists of four phases; Griffiths will be constructing the first phase. Future phases of improvements will complete an Active Travel Route to Bangor Station. These additional sections will be put to tender when funding becomes available, and will be separate to this phase of the overall project.
The works will take place in the vicinity of the Ysbyty Gwynedd roundabout and run for approximately 1 km starting at the Coed y Maes junction and running along Penrhos Road to the junction at Coed Mawr.
The works will include:
- Road narrowing
- Creating the Active Travel path, which involves making the existing footpath wider (i.e. slightly narrowing the highway)
- Installation of new kerbs, tactile crossings, controlled crossings – which will be both zebra crossings with Belisha beacons and Pelican crossings
- New signage will also be installed along with radar activated speed reminder signs
We appreciate this is a very busy stretch of roadway; in order for us to carry out the works safely, temporary traffic lights will be used to control traffic flow. These will be a mixture of 2, 3 and 4-way lights, depending on junctions in the immediate working area, and will be manned during peak times.
