Holyhead to Trearddur Bay Active Travel Scheme
About The Project
Griffiths were appointed by Anglesey County Council to deliver an Active Travel Route from Penrhos Retail Park to Trearddur Bay as part of the North Wales Metro. The project is funded by the Welsh Government Active Travel Fund and managed by Transport for Wales.
The route identified for improvements runs from the Tesco Roundabout (A5) in Holyhead through Parc Cybi and on to Trearddur Bay, providing key connections to Holyhead Leisure Centre, Penrhos Retail Park and Parc Cybi. The section at the Junction 2 A55 overbridge is excluded from the scope of this project and will be developed in a later scheme.
The site extent includes:
- The A5 London Road (at junction with A5153)
- The A5153 (between Holyhead Leisure Centre and Penrhos Retail Park)
- Improvements to the Leisure Centre access road
- An off-carriageway path through the Parc Cybi development
- Lôn Trefignath
- Lôn Towyn Capel
- The B4545 and Lôn Isallt in Trearddur Bay
Work started on Monday 19th February 2024 at the Penrhos Retail Park Tesco roundabout and will progress from there towards Trearddur Bay. Usual Working hours will be between 7:30am and 6pm Monday to Saturday, and no traffic signals are scheduled to be in use on weekends. We will not be working during the Easter Bank Holidays.
Access to all the retail outlets and the Leisure Centre will be maintained throughout the construction period and all businesses will remain open as normal.
We have visited each of the retail outlets and businesses at Penrhos Retail Park to explain the works, and we will be contacting residents and businesses prior to work commencing in other areas with relevant information prior to starting work in their respective areas.
We appreciate that this is a very busy stretch of roadway. However, in order for us to carry out the works as safely and as quickly as we can, we have to use temporary traffic lights during the works, which will be manually controlled during peak times.
The phasing of the works are as follows:
Phase 1 – 22nd February 2024 – 15th March 2024
At the Tesco roundabout. No traffic lights will be required for this phase of works.
Phase 2 – 18th March 2024 – 28th March 2024
We will be working from the roundabout adjacent to the KFC outlet to the Morrisons roundabout. 4-way traffic signals will be required for this phase of work, which will be controlled manually during peak traffic hours.
Phase 3 – 2nd April 2024 – 10th April 2024
This phase of works at Parc Penrhos will see works being carried out between the Morrisons roundabout and the A55 Junction 2 roundabout. We will require 4-way traffic lights for this phase of works.
Phase 4 – 11th April 2024 – 23rd April 2024
The final phase of works at Parc Penrhos will see works being carried out between the A55 Junction 2 roundabout and the Morrisons roundabout. We will require 3-way traffic lights for this phase of works.
Access to all the retail outlets and Holyhead Leisure Centre will be maintained throughout the construction period and all businesses will remain open as normal.
As works progresses away from Penrhos Retail Park we will be contacting relevant residents and businesses prior to work commencing in other areas with key information.
We appreciate that this is a busy stretch of road. However, in order to carry out the works safely, efficiently and to the highest standard possible, temporary traffic lights will have to be used to control the traffic flow. These will be manually controlled during peak times.
